Urine odor in our mattress is a big no-no. I don't think anyone can sleep in a mattress that does not smell right. So it is imperative to get rid of the smell pronto.
Some people opt for the use of store-bought mattress deodorizers and cleaners. However, a lot of people are not satisfied with the results. Rather than shell out money to buy these expensive cleaners, just clean your mattress using the things you have at home.
Infant Mattress
Method 1: Baking Soda
Sprinkle baking soda on the part where the smell is located. Using a brush, make sure some of the baking soda penetrates in the mattress. This is the best way to do it without soaking the mattress with water.
Baking soda can also be used if you want to get rid of some stain in the mattress. Just dilute it water and use it to scrub the area clean.
Method 2: Baby Powder
Baby powder can be used in the same way as baking soda. Make sure all the excess urine is gone first before using baby powder. Sprinkle it on top and let it sit there to get rid of the lingering urine smell. The next thing you can do is to vacuum it to dry the inside completely.
Method 3: Alcohol
Any clear rubbing alcohol is great. Just pour rubbing alcohol on the affected area. It soaks up the odor and it gets rid of the bacteria too. No need to vacuum it dry too because it dries up pretty nicely on its own.
Method 4: Vinegar Solution
Using a vinegar solution maybe a bit of a hassle for some especially to those who do not like the smell of vinegar. But take a chance on this as it does a great job in removing the smell. You can dilute white vinegar in warm water and blot the affected area with clean towel and the vinegar solution. Make sure the solution penetrates in the mattress. Dry it up using the vacuum cleaner.
Method 5: Lemon Juice
This is for the people who do not want vinegar solution. Just substitute it with lemon juice instead.
It is also better to let the mattress dry under the sun. The sun can get rid of the smell and also the bacteria that may be populating inside the mattress. But anyway, try any of the tricks introduced earlier and you can get the smell off in no time. Happy cleaning!
